His DIRTY TRICKS are so SICK

Cobbler, 64, gets young Viet bride from matchmaking agency

Keeps her for sex in Geylang hotel for 5 days

Return her to agency and vanishes without trace

SHE came to Singapore to look for a husband.

So imagine her joy when the matchmaking agency she had registered with told her that a man had chosen her to be his wife.

Little did this 21-year-old Vietnamese woman know that the Singaporean was a con man who had only one thing on his mind - sex. His plan was to abandon her after he’s had his fun.

The 64-year-old man, who met Mary (not her real name) at the agency, took her to a small hotel room in Geylang where she had to submit to his sexual demands over five days.

After that, he took Mary back to the agency and left her there.

    CHEQUE BOUNCED

The agency later discovered that they had been duped when the cheque from the man bounced.

Heartbroken and feeling cheated, Mary made a police report alleging rape because she was misled into having sex with the man.

We are withholding the woman’s real name to protect her identity.

Mary’s ordeal began shortly after she left her rural village in Vietnam last month.

Like many other young Vietnamese women, she chose to leave her family behind in search of a better life in Singapore.

The matchmaking agency she had signed up with paid for her expenses during her 14-day stay here on a social visit pass.

For a few days, she sat at the agency, alongside other women, waiting to be picked by one of the many men who walked in to inquire about brides-to-be, or those who peered into the agency out of curiosity.

In the afternoons, the petite and fair-skinned woman would go for lessons on conversational Mandarin and how to handle household chores and use electrical appliances.

Finally, on 24 Oct, her heart leapt.

A man showed interest in her.

The matchmaker, who spoke to The New Paper on Sunday on condition that we do not name him or the agency, said the man had picked her after looking at her pictures.

The ‘groom-to-be’, who said he was a cobbler, told the agency that his wife had died about 10 years ago and he wanted a companion as he was lonely.

Mary was so glad to have found a match that she readily agreed to marry him.

Never mind that he was old enough to be her grandfather.

She just wanted to settle down and break out of the poverty cycle back home.

They registered online for a solemnisation date at the Registry of Marriages. Mary then followed her ‘husband’ thinking he was going to his home.

Instead, the medium-built, grey-haired man took her to a Geylang hotel.

Recalling her bad experience, Mary said her ‘husband’ made her have sex with him twice a day.

He took her out occasionally to visit places of interest like the zoo and Kusu Island.

Thinking that this was the ‘honeymoon’ period, she complied with everything he wanted.

After they checked out on 29 Oct, he took her back to the shopping centre where the matchmaking agency was, under the pretext of getting her clothes and personal belongings from the matchmaker.

Mary said the man gestured for her to go in on her own, collect her belongings and then meet him at the entrance of the shopping centre.

She did so, not suspecting that anything was amiss.

It was only when she walked into the agency that she realised that she had been taken for a ride.

The matchmaker told her that her ‘husband’s’ cheque had bounced, and that he had already made a police report.

The figure ‘$1.0000’ (with a dot before the zeros) had been written on the cheque, along with the Chinese word for $10,000.

The matchmaker said: ‘I didn’t look at the figures closely - I just counted the zeros and they read correctly.

‘When I tried to bank in the cheque, the bank officer told me that it was only for $1. What’s more, the account was closed in 2002!’

As Mary did not return to the agency the day after she left with the man, the matchmaker also made a missing person’s report as he was worried about her safety.

They had previously agreed that she would return to collect her belongings and also to let him know that she was safe.

The employees at the agency, as well as Mary, dashed out to look for the man.

But he was nowhere to be found.

The matchmaker said: ‘We had gone down to the address written on his IC, but he was not there.

‘It became clear to us that he was a cheat, and we have only ourselves to blame for believing he was a genuine client.’

It was a painful lesson for the agency - the matchmaker not only lost about $8,000 incurred in accommodation and airfare for Mary, he had to send her back a shattered woman, after she chose to return home.

    TEST FOR STD

He had earlier also sent her to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital to test for sexually-transmitted diseases.

    The results were negative.

The matchmaker said of Mary: ‘She could not stop crying after she realised that she had been cheated of her body and marriage opportunity.

‘I gave her a +++en sum as compensation for her ordeal, but nothing I do, say or give her can ever make amends for what she went through.’

As a precaution, the agency said that in future it will not accept clients above the age of 60.

The matchmaker said firmly: ‘Usually, we are able to sense the men who are in for a ride, but this time, we were careless and missed the signs.

‘It’s the worst possible case for us, and I hope that it will be the last.’

Police spokesman Victor Keong said this case has been classified as cheating, an offence which carries a jail term of seven years upon conviction.
