Fate or Destiny - Part 1

    Chapter #61

That was the last time I saw her.

I banked in the cheque and transferred the amount to my dad.

He was surprised that I had so much money and questioned me on that.

Dad: Boy, why do you have so much money?

    Me: I earned it….

Dad: did you do something illegal?

    Me: no….

Dad: so tell me where did you get the money….

Me: STOP ASKING! IT’S CLEAN MONEY OK!!!!

He was surprised at my outburst.

Dad: Are you ok? What’s wrong? what happened?

I did not tell him and broke down.

For the next 6 months, I stopped my work and stayed in my room, wallowing in my misery.

Perhaps you might think that I was a wuss but perhaps that was what I was.

I remembered it was a Saturday morning when my dad came to me.

Dad: boy…. no matter what happened, you need to move on with life…..

I did not reply him and he dropped his bank book on the bed beside me. There were almost 6million dollars in the account!

Dad: What you gave me, I invested the entire amount in multiple portfolios. Somehow, I was lucky and this is what I earned….

I was unable to believe my ears.

Dad: Yesterday was the last day in my company…..

    Me: dad, are you retiring?

Dad: no…. I’m going to China to set up a business and need you to come with me…..

    Me: but…. but….

Dad: no buts…… I have some contacts and will need your help…… so, you will need to come with me……

I followed him because I did not want to leave my parents alone again.

Dad’s good friend, who had since migrated, had a daughter called Coleen, who worked for the owner of multiple plantations in Malaysia. They got Coleen to convince her boss to supply us palm oil and all we had to do was to find buyers over there.

The first 6 months over there were tough but somehow, our wholly foreign-owned enterprise (WFOE) in China found its footing and we started making money.

Before long, we even started manufacturing our own products and by the end of the next 3 years, our company had grown so much that it caught the attention of a conglomerate. They quoted us an offer that we could not reject and taking their final offer of a cool 150 million dollars, we sold the company and returned back home.

My dad only took 5 million of the total sum and gave me the remaining.

I was back for about a month when I saw her again. It was 4 years to the day since we had the paragliding accident.

I was coming out of an office building after meeting with my investment consultant when she walked perpendicularly across me.

She had not changed much except that she had cut her hair to a bob-style and looked a bit slimmer than before. Her dressing was still the same, baggy T-shirt and culottes. With her was a plump man and a young child.

All the past feelings I had for her came rushing back to me at that instant but I controlled myself.

She saw me and was equally surprised.

    Jamie: Hi, how are you?

    Me: I’m good….

Jamie: This is my husband, Cory….

    Me: Hi…..

He grunted and did not seemed too interested in what we were talking about as he took out his phone and started to play games on it.

Jamie: and this is our boy….

I squatted down and smiled at him. The kid had her eyes and nose but I could not see any resemblances to his father.

Me: Hi, handsome boy….. what’s your name?

    Boy: mmm… Jie Lun…..

He replied me shyly and I was shocked. I stood up and looked at her in the eyes.

    Me: Jay….. Jay chow?

    She smiled wearily.

Jamie: yes…. it’s because I loved Zhou jie Lun so much that I decided to name our kid after him…… luckily he allowed me to…..

She gestured at Cory but I was stunned.

Me: how…. how old is he?

Jamie: Oh, he’d just passed his 3rd birthday about 2 months ago…..

I did not know what else to say.

Cory: hey….. we need to go…. our parents are waiting for us for lunch…..

    Jamie: ok….

    She turned to me.

Jamie: take care of yourself… I have to go….

    With that, they walked off.

As I stared after them, the boy turned around and waved to me.

I clenched my fists and a tear rolled down from the side of my cheeks.

I knew what I needed to do.
