Zika cases in Singapore top 200

SINGAPORE: There are 26 new cases of locally transmitted Zika virus in Singapore, authorities said on Saturday (Sep 3), bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 215.

In a joint statement, the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Environment Agency (NEA) said 24 of the new cases are linked to the Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive/Kallang Way/Paya Lebar Way cluster.

They added that two cases have no known links to any existing cluster, but did not specify where these cases were located.

Meanwhile, the National Public Health Laboratory has worked with A*STAR’s Bioinformatics Institute to complete the sequencing analysis of the Zika virus found in two patients from the Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive cluster, and the analysis indicated that the virus belongs to the Asian lineage and likely evolved from the strain that was already circulating in Southeast Asia, MOH and NEA said.

Zika cases hit 215 on Sat, as analysis shows Asian lineage of virus in S’pore

    Updated: 9:19 PM, September 3, 2016

SINGAPORE — An analysis of the Zika virus found in two patients from the Aljunied Cresent/ Sims Drive cluster showed that the virus belongs to the Asian lineage and likely evolved from the strain that was already circulating in South-east Asia, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.

The virus from these patients was not imported from South America, the MOH added of the finding concluded by the National Public Health Laboratory and A*STAR’s Bioinformatics Institute after completing genetic sequencing of the virus.

In MOH’s latest update, 26 new cases of locally transmitted Zika virus infection in Singapore have been confirmed as of 12pm on Saturday (Sept 3), bringing the total number of cases to 215.

Of these, 24 cases are linked to the the Aljunied Crescent/ Sims Drive/ Kallang Way/ Paya Lebar Way cluster.

Two cases have no known links to any existing cluster, said the MOH.

The Republic announced its first locally contracted case of Zika last Saturday.

The Aedes mosquito-borne Zika, which has been detected in 67 countries and territories including hard-hit Brazil, causes only mild symptoms for most people such as fever and a rash.

I rather use the frogs to fight against the Aedes mosquitoes rather than releasing another type of mosquitoes into the environment . Like I say before and I will say it again better to kill all mosquitoes before it gets out of hand.

Hello why is it impossible to kill all mosquitos ? Singapore is so small unlike Malaysia . If they can put cameras every where I don’t see why the government can’t go and kill all the mosquitoes ? Must we tell them what to do ?

MOH reviewing practice of isolating Zika-infected patients, may send them home to recuperate instead: Amy Khor

    Published 9 hours ago

    Melissa Lin

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Health is reviewing the practice of isolating potential Zika-infected patients, Senior Minister of State for Environment and Water Resources and Health Amy Khor said on Sunday (Sept 4).

Currently, those who are suspected of having Zika are isolated at the Communicable Disease Centre as they await their test results. Those found to be Zika-positive are isolated in hospitals.

The Ministry is considering letting suspected Zika-infected patients rest at home while their blood and urine samples are tested, and sending confirmed cases home to recuperate, said Dr Khor. But they will be advised to take precautions such as applying insect repellent to prevent themselves from getting bitten by mosquitoes.

“We are reviewing the practice of isolating Zika-positive patients who are actually clinically well and do not need to be hospitalised. In fact, they could be sent home to recuperate but take necessary precautions like applying repellent so they don’t get bitten,” said Dr Khor on the sidelines of a community outreach event at Hong Kah North.

Zika update: 27 new cases, bringing total to 242

    Published 1 hour ago

    Annabeth Leow

SINGAPORE - The number of locally transmitted Zika cases stands at 242 on Sunday (Sept 4), one week since the outbreak was first reported in Singapore.

This is up by 27 from 215 cases on Saturday.

Twenty-five of the new cases are from the initial Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive/Kallang Way/ Paya Lebar Way cluster, while one is from a potential new cluster in Joo Seng Road where a previous case was found.

The last of the new cases has no known links to any cluster.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said that, as of Saturday, it has destroyed 62 breeding habitats in the Aljunied cluster and 39 breeding habitats in Bedok North Avenue.

NEA will continue with its mosquito control and outreach efforts in those areas, as well as at the potential Joo Seng Road cluster.

As the number of Zika cases climbs, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is reviewing its practice of isolating suspected and confirmed Zika patients, Senior Minister of State for Environment and Water Resources and Health Amy Khor said earlier on Sunday.

And it must b done thoroughly including underground.

Maybe you fog till spore like haze can.

But don’t know got side effects bo.

But but you know spore got forest n bodies of water. How? Fog again? You cannot convert all fresh water to salt water. Sentosa leh?

And even if you fog till siao, its easy to bring mosquitoes from jb n other places. Then how? Fog again? Won’t b surprised all the non stop fogging will lead to illness n birth effects.

And mosquitoes are part of ecological circle. Last time NASA kill them, end up create other problems.

There are mosquito traps available . Also can ask pest control companies as they are well versed in these areas . But on the flip side if you let the mosquito to live are you prepared for more people to die from it ?

Isolation of Zika cases to end; MOH to subsidise Zika testing for all S’poreans with symptoms

    Published 1 hour ago

    Chew Hui Min

SINGAPORE - Suspected Zika cases will no longer need to be isolated while waiting for their test results from Tuesday (Sept 6), authorities said.

“As the cases of Zika in Singapore have been mild so far, confirmed cases will no longer need to be hospitalised unless medically indicated,” the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a statement on Monday.

The Ministry will extend subsidies for the Zika test to all Singaporeans with symptoms of the disease, whether or not they are in an existing cluster.

More than a week after the first locally transmitted case of Zika was identified, most of the confirmed cases have been found in the Aljunied Crescent, Sims Drive, Kallang Way and Paya Lebar Way area, but new cases have emerged all over the island.

Besides the Aljunied area, two clusters have been identified in Bedok North Avenue 3 and Joo Seng Road.
