Two-hour shutdown of mobile access at four Circle Line stations as probe into signal interference intensifies

SINGAPORE - Commuters on the Circle Line will not be able to use their mobile devices at Kent Ridge, Haw Par Villa, Pasir Panjang and Labrador Park stations between 7pm and 9pm on Friday (sept2) evening.
In a joint announcement made at 6.38pm, the Land Transport Authority and rail operator SMRT said the two-hour shutdown was to eliminate telecommunication signals as a possible cause of a mysterious technical glitch that has bugged the five-year-old line since Monday.
“This temporary suspension of mobile communication services will affect commuters only while they are travelling in the underground tunnels along these four stations and on the stations’ underground platforms while waiting for train arrivals,” the joint statement read.
“They will not be able to make mobile phone calls, SMS or access the Internet during the suspension. Commuters who need to make urgent phone calls can approach SMRT staff at the Passenger Service Centre in each station for assistance.”

askST: How does the Circle Line train signalling system work?

Reader Andrew Kurniawan Ng wanted to know how the MRT signalling system works, and why a glitch in it can cause such “havoc” as seen on the Circle Line this week.
Senior Transport Correspondent Christopher Tan replies:
Signalling refers to a broad range of systems which allow trains to run safely. In the Circle Line, the trains are fitted with a communications-based train control “moving block” signalling system.
Using telecommunication signals to “talk”, the trains are able to keep a safe distance from each other, irrespective of speeds. Compared to a “fixed block” system, a “moving block” system is more sophisticated, and it allows trains to run closer to each other.

The North-East Line - which is driverless like the Circle Line - runs on a similar system. The North-South, East-West lines are also converting to this system.
In addition, the Circle Line has an automatic train protection system to govern train speed, an automatic train supervision system to track and schedule trains, and another system that prevents incorrect signals to be set.
They all form many pairs of “eyes” and “ears” of the network. It is unusual for a system with such a high redundancy to trip up.
Yet, that has been happening the whole of this week. Because of an unknown signal interference in the tunnels, communication between trains and track is lost intermittently. This has the effect of a train going blind and deaf momentarily, and causes yet another fail-safe system to kick in - the emergency brakes.

If SQ crash cos they turn on satellite phone n net, n got interference, definitely SQ in deep deep shit.
But smrt won’t have sacking la. You wait la.
Maybe wayang n whack small fry
This just shows that some certain people are reading this thread .
And need bro SiaSuay to make an observation to start them looking into it . And I hope whoever is reading this please get Desmond Kuek to resign from his post . It is no shame to admit that he is incapable to solve all this technical problems . Even the former Transport Minister resigned with his reputation intact . Hopefully the SMRT will do the right thing and regain public confidence in the company .

Interfering signal detected in Circle Line tunnel: SMRT, LTA

SINGAPORE: An interfering signal in the Circle Line tunnel, within the operating frequency band of the trains’ signalling system, could be the cause of disruptions to normal train service in the past week, SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced in a joint statement on Saturday (Sep 3).
The interfering signal could be a possible cause of the intermittent loss of train-to-track communications but experts have not yet been able to verify the source, SMRT and LTA stated. The Circle Line has seen trains slowing down during peak hours for five consecutive days, due to issues with the signalling system.
On Friday, SMRT announced it would switch off mobile signals at four Circle Line stations for two hours the same evening, “to eliminate telecommunication signals as a possible cause” and more tests were also conducted throughout the night between 1 am and 4 am.
“However, as there was no incident last evening, the tests were inconclusive. In fact, since 4 pm yesterday, there has not been any intermittent loss of signal communication of train-to-track communications,” SMRT and LTA said.

More mobile service suspensions on Circle Line possible to pinpoint source of interfering signal: SMRT, LTA

SINGAPORE - An interfering signal in the Circle Line tunnel is the possible cause of a signalling glitch that has plagued the MRT line this week.
However, more investigation is required into the matter, and further temporary shutdowns of mobile service on the line are possible.
“This interfering signal could be a possible cause of the intermittent loss of train-to-track communications,” the SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said.
“However, experts have not been able to verify the source.”
The signal is “within the operating frequency band of the signalling system”, SMRT said in a statement on Saturday (Sept 3) evening.
Mobile signals in four Circle Line stations, Kent Ridge, Haw Par Villa, Pasir Panjang and Labrador Park, were shut down for two hours on Friday evening to investigate the issue.
More tests were also conducted throughout the night between 1 am and 4 am, and investigations are continuing, said SMRT.
However, the tests were inconclusive as there was no recurrence of the signal loss last night. The “intermittent loss of signal communication” has not occurred since 4pm on Friday, SMRT said.
Should and when an incident recurs, telecommunication signals along stretches of the Circle Line will be suspended for short periods of time for further tests.
“If temporary telecommunication signal suspensions have to be carried out, there will be in-train and station announcements along the affected stretches,” said SMRT.
“We seek commuters’ understanding and patience as we press on in our investigations.”
