[UPDATE on Friday, Dec. 29 at 7:35pm: adding statement from SMRT]

Four Singaporeans were charged in court on Friday, December 29, with conspiring and cheating SMRT Trains Ltd of a hefty $9.8 million in contracts awarded to a company they allegedly secretly had interests in between 2007 and 2012.

    The four men are:

    1. Jamalludin Bin Jumari, 61, a former manager at SMRT Trains Ltd.

According to a press release from the Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau (CPIB), Jamalludin fled to Malaysia in 2013. After “recently” being found by Malaysian authorities, he was brought back to Singapore to face charges.

SMRT Seah Moon Ming: We will rush project completion 4 years earlier by 2020

    December 30, 2017

In an internal circulation by SMRT Chairman Seah Moon Ming, the government-owned public transport operator told employees that the company will rush completion for all engineering works at North-South and East-West Lines 4 years earlier than the stipulated completion date of 2020. The announcement sparked worries among SMRT employees, who believe they are facing political pressure to meet the 2020 deadline when the Singapore’s next general election will be held.

In the email, SMRT Chairman did not explain how SMRT is going to complete the ongoing overhaul works 4 years ahead of schedule. It is unknown if resources are going to be multiplied above the current capacity to achieve the completion. Chairman Seah Moon Ming wrote that the company is adopting “world’s best standards” in system engineering but did not explain further. According to a source close with SMRT, the works include adding power supply lines. reconfiguration of the problematic signalling system, train replacements and railway upgrades.

Earlier in Sep, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan claimed that rail reliability is improving based off a lop-sided measurement created by the government. The “Mean Kilometre Between Failure” (MKBF) measurement omit train speed, delays less than 5 minutes, extensiveness of delay incidents, and the length of time of the delay. This allow SMRT to present a better report as most of it’s delays are major disruptions affecting the entire line and lasting for hours.

Khaw Boon Wan visits SMRT ground staff on New Year’s Eve to boost morale

A tough year it has been for operator and overseer.

    By Belmont Lay | January 1, 2018

When 2017 was almost firmly behind him, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan paid a night visit to SMRT employees on Dec. 31, 2017 to boost team morale.

Extended services on New Year’s Day

This latest visit was publicised by Khaw, as well as the transport operator SMRT.

Staff for the public transport operators in Singapore were putting in extra hours as services were extended as part of New Year’s Day celebrations.

Khaw wrote in his post that he spent an hour at SMRT Operations Control Centre, which controls train operations from SMRT’s headquarters at North Bridge Road.

    Visit a morale booster

Khaw’s New Year’s Eve visit is timely.

It comes at a crucial time and signals a fresh start in the new year as highly-visible and memorable public transport woes have consistently overshadowed any good work or progress made by the transport operators the past year.

Moreover, in October 2017, foreign affairs minister Vivian Balakrishnan stepped in on behalf of Khaw following the North-South Line MRT flooding and breakdown.

The foreign affairs minister hosted bus and train staff from SBS Transit and SMRT to a morale-lifting breakfast in lieu of Khaw.

Dear Ah Khaw do not just simply the workers for all the bad things that has been happening lately . You should also seriously look at SMRT’s top management . The top management at SMRT should also be held accountable and responsibility for the operations of SMRT Trains .

Wishing everyone a Safe and Happy New Year 2018 . As for me I am still boycotting SMRT Trains and find other alternatives mode of transport . Please don’t blame the frontline staff but blame the SMRT top management ; LTA & of course Ah Khaw .

SINGAPORE: Shuttle bus services will be made available to support the shorter operational hours along the East-West Line (EWL) on weekends in January, SMRT said in a news release on Monday (Jan 1).

A total of four shuttle bus services will be made available for commuters during these weekends, it added.

“During the early closure, late opening and full-day closure of these stations, two shuttle bus services, Shuttle 7 and Shuttle 81, will be available for commuters travelling between Aljunied and Pasir Ris MRT stations, and between Tanah Merah and Changi Airport MRT stations respectively. These shuttle bus services will stop at pick-up and drop-off points near the affected MRT stations.”

Two additional shuttle bus services, Shuttle 11 and Express 12, will also be introduced.

“Shuttle 11 will provide commuters with a connection between Aljunied MRT station and the Circle Line and Downtown Line at MacPherson MRT station, while Express 12 will provide commuters with a connection between Changi Airport and the city area,” SMRT added.

Ten MRT stations along the EWL will be affected by the measure from Jan 5 which is meant to “facilitate more rail maintenance and renewal works on the eastern stretch of the East-West Line”.

Track signalling fault causes delay on East West Line on Tuesday morning

    Published 43 sec ago

SINGAPORE - A track signalling fault led to a delay on the East West MRT Line on Tuesday morning (Jan 2).

SMRT to deploy more staff to help commuters with second month of MRT closures

    Published 3 hours ago

    Adrian Lim

    Transport Correspondent

SINGAPORE - SMRT will double the number of ground staff deployed for the second month of shorter MRT operating hours on weekends, which will kick off on Friday night (Jan 5).

From about 300 staff previously, it will have up to 600 boots on the ground, including traffic controllers, crowd marshals and station personnel to guide commuters to alternative travel options, such as shuttle buses.

For the month of January, 10 MRT stations on the East-West Line (EWL) – from Paya Lebar to Pasir Ris, along with Changi Airport and Expo MRT stations – will have shorter operating hours on weekends, including full-day closures on two Sundays, on Jan 21 and 28.

These 10 stations will close earlier at 11am on Fridays and Saturdays, and open later at 8am on Saturdays and Sundays. Train operation hours are usually from 5.30am until midnight.

This is the second round of planned closures, to facilitate rail maintenance works, and to accelerate the EWL’s upgrade to a new signalling system by the middle of this year, instead of the year end.

Early closure of Changi Airport MRT station goes off largely without a hitch

    By Aqil Haziq Mahmud @AqilHaziqCNA

    06 Jan 2018 08:30AM (Updated: 06 Jan 2018 08:40AM)

SINGAPORE: At around 11.10pm on Friday (Jan 5), it all began with the familiar announcement chime.

Then, a message: “Attention please. There is no more train service. We are closing the station. Good night.”

With that, the second round of MRT closures – this time on the eastern sector of the East-West Line – kicked off.

Commuters strolling towards the station stopped and looked around. But there were no loud groans, only quick sighs. Nobody seemed irritated that the trains were shutting shop earlier than usual.

Their composure mirrored that of the 10 or so SMRT staff deployed at the Terminal 3 entrance to the station. These men and women, some donning luminous lime green vests, seemed prepared for a thousand queries.

After all, about an hour earlier, dozens of them were briefed about their duties by a man who spoke in a booming voice. He had made clear the timings and pick-up location of the supporting shuttle services.

Commuters caught up by the closure started murmuring at large signs, placed smack in the middle of the space, directing them up an escalator to the departure hall for the shuttles.

SMRT train abruptly reverse on North-South Line

    January 7, 2018

A life-endangering train breakdown incident on North-South Line (NSL) went unreported last Tuesday (Jan 2) with commuters reporting that the train abruptly reversed. According to a news article reported by Chinese papers Shin Ming Ri Bao yesterday (Jan 7), a commuter said that the train was travelling from Ang Mo Kio station to Bishan when the train made several irregular stoppages.

Commuter Mr Wu told the Chinese papers that the train heading towards the city was stopping at Ang Mo Kio station, travelled for about 100m before applying the brakes to a complete stop in the middle of the track. About 3 mins later, the train reversed and travelled back to the station at a relatively high speed. After stopping at Ang Mo Kio station for about a minute, the train made the reversal further back towards Choa Chu Kang’s direction.

As there was no announcement by SMRT, many commuters were shocked by the abrupt reversal believing that the train may collide with the incoming one. The train then stopped after travelling about 200m and returned to Ang Mo Kio station before proceeding to it’s regular schedule.

The Chinese state media papers apparently delayed the reporting by a week despite having received the news first hand on the day.
