Circle Line, East-West Line hit by separate faults on Wednesday morning

    15 Nov 2017 06:55AM (Updated: 15 Nov 2017 08:49AM)

SINGAPORE: Both the Circle Line and East-West Line were affected by delays during the morning rush hour on Wednesday (Nov 15) due to two separate faults.

Delays on the Circle Line were caused by a signalling fault, SMRT said in a tweet at 6.42am. It advised commuters to expect 20 minutes of additional travel time between Buona Vista and HarbourFront MRT stations, in both directions.

In another tweet at 7.22am, the train operator announced that free bus services were available between Paya Lebar and HarbourFront stations.

In an earlier tweet at 6.28am, SMRT said a signal fault had caused slower train service between Botanic Gardens and Haw Par Villa.

The fault was cleared more than two hours later, although trains and stations remained crowded, SMRT said.

SINGAPORE - An SMRT train hit a stationary one at the Joo Koon MRT station platform around 8am on Wednesday (Nov 15) during the morning peak hour when trains are usually packed.

About a minute later, a second train stopped behind the first train but soon after moved forward unexpectedly and “came into contact with the first train”.

How to understand the Joo Koon MRT station train collision

If you’re a regular public transport commuter, this is what you understand.

    By Belmont Lay | November 15, 2017

Two SMRT trains were involved in a collision at the Joo Koon MRT station platform around 8am on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

    What happened?

A train heading in the direction of Tuas Link station stalled at Joo Koon station at 8.18am.

A minute later, a second train stopped behind the first faulty train.

At 8.20am, which was another minute later, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train.

A total of 25 people — 23 passengers and two SMRT staff — sustained light to moderate injuries and were taken conscious to the National University Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

They were believed to have been thrown off balance by the impact.

Here’s how to understand the Joo Koon MRT station train boop in context

    1. If SMRT was a person with feelings

    2. This accident comes one day after Public Transport Workers’ Appreciation Day

The universe is either conspiring against SMRT or bad luck is a thing.

    Shagged.

    1. The trains booping each other could be the result of the new signalling system

After all that bother with putting in place a new signalling system, it doesn’t work that well.

The implications of this, if true, are unimaginable. It could mean more time needed to tweak the system and more down time for trains, and more inconveniences for commuters

Joo Koon MRT train incident: Passengers thrown to the floor, evacuated from driver’s cabin, says witness

Twenty-three passengers and two SMRT staff suffered light to moderate injuries in the incident.

    PUBLISHED 2 HOURS AGO

    Adrian Lim Transport Correspondent

SINGAPORE - Mr Alexandru Robu, 35, was on the westbound train on the East-West Line, when it came to a sudden halt just before Joo Koon MRT station, causing passengers to lose their balance and fall.

“I’ve experienced sudden stops before on the MRT, but this time it was really bad,” the service coordinator told The Straits Times.

Mr Robu, who works in a marine equipment firm, was on the SMRT train which hit a stationary train at Joo Koon at around 8am on Wednesday (Nov 15). According to rail operator SMRT, the train Mr Robu was on stopped behind the first train, but moved forward unexpectedly and came into contact with it.

A total of 23 passengers and two SMRT staff sustained light to moderate injuries and were taken conscious to the National University Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

Mr Robu said about 70 per cent of the commuters in his train, including himself, were thrown to the floor by the sudden halt. He said he was unhurt.

He said that one man, who looked to be in his 30s, was still lying on the cabin floor, when most other passengers got up after a few minutes.

“I went up to him and apparently he had hit his head and had a back injury. So I held his hand and talked to him,” said Mr Robu, adding that he also asked SMRT staff to call for an ambulance.

Mr Robu said his train remained where it was for 20 minutes. Commuters asked SMRT staff to open the doors of the first train carriage, so they could get onto the platform. But they were told it was not possible, as all the doors would have to be opened, he added.

SMRT staff later decided to evacuate the passengers from the driver’s cabin, one at a time.

Things always happen after Khaw opens his big mouth

Published on 2017-11-15 by The Online Citizen

    by Chen GJ

15 November morning, I was riding the MRT towards Joo Koon from Pioneer. I was at the front cabin of the train that almost reached Joo Koon MRT. At exactly 8.20 am, there was a loud bang, and a violent shaking threw everyone onto the floor. The lights also suddenly went out. I almost thought we were about to fall over.

From the pilot cabin, we could hear the Driver speaking on the radio. He spoke to the control center that the train behind had collided with the train behind.

A Bangladeshi or Indian man could not get up. He hit his head in the collision. A Caucasian man (possibly from Europe), rendered assistance.

I tried pressing the comms button, but there was no response. The Caucasian man spoke to the driver through the opening of the door, informing that there is an injured person on board.

An SMRT staff came from the other side to check on the casualty. He probably came from the rear of the train. We asked him if it was possible to open the train door to let the injured person out. The staff said that if the train door was opened, then all the train doors would be opened at the same time, which would endanger passengers walking on the electrified tracks. I asked him if it was possible to just open only a single door. He replied they cannot control it like that.

After a long time, the front door from the driver side was opened. 2 passengers helped the injured man to his feet and got him out first. The rest of us then followed outside. It was 8.50, half an hour since the collision.

At the control station of Joo Koon, people were forming a long queue. They were queuing to get the excuse sheet, as well as to cancel the overstay status, as they cannot tap out with their EZ Link cards.

To my dismay, I realized that the gantry of Joo Koon was still deducting fares. The one thing that never breaks down. I approached the staff, explained the fare deduction should be cancelled. She told me that she has no power to make such a decision, and just referred me to another staff. After approaching 3 staff, the male SMRT staff opened one gate with no fare deduction. I told him the fare waiver should be for the whole station, not just one gate, but he said this was the best he could do.

Commuters Greet Train Collision with Frustration, Blame, Derision

    November 15, 2017

A collision was reported at 8am this morning, 15 November, when a stationary train was hit by an SMRT train at the Joo Koon MRT station.

According to Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), injured passengers, numbering at least 23, were brought to Ng Teng Fong Hospital and Singapore General Hospital.

Commuters reported on social media that passengers on the moving train fell down when the collision occurred.

Trains were delayed on the East-West Line as a result of the collision.

With obvious frustration at numerous recent train delays, floods, announcements of shorter operating hours for certain train lines, and train, track and signal faults, derisive comments from netizens on social media immediately flew fast and furious, putting much of the blame on Khaw Boon Wan, Singapore’s Minister for Transport and Desmond Kuek, the Chief Executive Officer of SMRT

North-South Line hit by delays during evening rush hour

    15 Nov 2017 06:42PM (Updated: 15 Nov 2017 06:57PM)

SINGAPORE: Commuters are being advised to take alternative train lines after SMRT announced that they could face up to 40 minutes’ extra travelling time on the North-South Line (NSL) during the evening rush hour on Wednesday (Nov 15).

The announcement comes on the back of disruptions on Circle Line and East-West Line in the morning, including one involving a train collision. Both lines are operated by SMRT as well.

The train operator had first announced on Twitter at 5.05pm that commuters could face longer travelling time due to fewer trains serving the NSL.

At 5.45pm, it said commuters should cater for an additional 25 minutes in their journey.

At 6.29pm, it revised that figure to 40 minutes.

A Channel NewsAsia reader said it took around 30 minutes for his journey from Newton to Bishan MRT station.

The journey normally takes less than 10 minutes. He added that at Newton MRT station, the train doors did not close for more than five minutes.
