SINGAPORE - Train services on the East-West line were delayed on Wednesday (Dec 14) during the morning peak due to a signalling fault at Aljunied MRT Station.

SMRT in a tweet at 8.39am advised commuters to “add 20min travel time between Pasir Ris and Outram Park”.

It added that “train services are still available”, but advised commuters to refer to bus guides on its site for more details.

Commuters reacted angrily online, with some saying they had been stuck for longer than 20 minutes; others reacted in disbelief at the frequency of breakdowns.

Said Valerie O in response to SMRT’s tweet: “The number of faults remains truly baffling”.

Choked drain at MRT site caused flood

AUDREY TAN & JALELAH ABU BAKER, THE STRAITS TIMES

    Dec 30, 2016 06:00 am

A choked drain in a nearby construction site for the upcoming Upper Thomson MRT station led to the flash floods that put a dampener on the festive mood at several eateries on Christmas Eve.

This was uncovered during investigations by national water agency PUB.

To fix the problem, the Land Transport Authority will get the worksite’s contractor to further improve the flow of water in the temporary diversion drain, which acts as a conduit for rain water while drainage upgrading works are ongoing.

“As part of works to construct Upper Thomson MRT Station, PUB is also working with LTA to upgrade the drain along Upper Thomson Road to enhance flood protection for the area,” the authorities told The Straits Times.

PUB has also reminded the construction industry to conduct checks on the public drains in the vicinity of their respective construction sites in preparation for the monsoon season.

The flash flood incident took place last Saturday, at a row of shops between Jalan Keli and Jalan Todak near Thomson Plaza.

About eight businesses along Upper Thomson Road were affected by the flash floods, and tenants said they suffered thousands of dollars in losses.

The Meteorological Services Singapore said average rainfall over Singapore that day was 35.5mm, with the highest daily rainfall that day recorded at Tai Seng (86.0mm).

Mr Jamal Mohamed, 50, a cashier at The Roti Prata House, one of the affected eateries, estimated his loss at about $30,000, including the hours that the shop had to stay closed while workers cleaned up.

After it closed at about 5.30pm on Saturday, workers managed to keep regular business hours only on Monday.

“We salvaged what we could, but flour, masala, rice and eggs were wasted,” said the employee, who has been working at the food joint for nine years.

The nearby construction for the Upper Thomson station, is part of a 22-station Thomson Line, started in 2014. The station will be built underneath a stretch of Upper Thomson Road between Thomson Plaza and the Church of the Holy Spirit.

    MRT upgrades full steam ahead

    Adrian Lim, The Straits Times

    Dec 29, 2016 06:00 am

Singapore’s first MRT system, the North-South and East-West lines, will turn 30 next year.

To renew its ageing infrastructure and extend the system’s lifespan, a slew of projects are under way, including the installation of a new signalling system to allow trains to arrive at shorter intervals, and the replacement of the power-supplying third rail.

Last Tuesday, a massive four-year project to replace 188,000 worn-out timber sleepers with new, hardier concrete ones was completed. This means a shorter, smoother and safer journey.

Sleepers help to hold the tracks in place, and worn-out ones can lead to a bumpier ride.

During the project, speed restrictions were temporarily imposed where the new sleepers were laid, increasing train journey times.

To give its workers more time during off-service hours, operator SMRT also ended services earlier for some time, and opened certain stations later on Sundays. This inevitably affected travel plans of commuters.

The replacement of 96,000 sleepers on the North-South line and 92,000 of them on the East-West line marks a milestone in their renewal.

With one major item on the list checked, the Land Transport Authority and SMRT can continue to roll ahead with the other upgrading projects.

Rail engineers typically have a short working window of between three and four hours in the early morning - when train services are offline.

Delays on East-West Line due to track fault

    Published 3 hours ago

    Updated 3 hours ago

SINGAPORE - A track fault caused delays for up to an hour on the East-West Line during morning rush hour on Wednesday (Jan 4).

The east-bound stretch from Boon Lay to Clementi stations was affected, train operator SMRT first said in a tweet at 7.47am.

It warned commuters to expect an additional 10 minutes travelling time, which it later revised to 15 minutes.

In an update at 8.03am, SMRT also revealed that the fault was near Clementi station and that trains were running slower as a result.

SMRT announced at 8.36am that the fault had been cleared.

MRT network performance up 30 per cent in 2016 from 2015

Last year, trains clocked 174,000 train-km travelled between delays of more than 5 minutes - a 30-per cent increase from 133,000 train-km in 2015.

    Published 4 hours ago

SINGAPORE - MRT trains generally travelled longer distances before encountering delays last year, compared to the year before, going by latest data from the Government showing improved train network performance.

Last year, trains clocked 174,000 train-km travelled between delays of more than five minutes, a 30 per cent increase from 133,000 train-km in 2015.

This was announced on Thursday (Jan 12) by Mr Pang Kin Keong, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Transport, at the third Joint Forum on Infrastructure Maintenance.

The best performing MRT train line was the Downtown Line, which achieved 260,000 train-km between delays of more than five minutes last year, up from 45,000 train-km the previous year.

The next best performer was the Circle Line which managed to hit 260,000 train-km, despite being plagued by signalling problems last year. In 2015, trains on the Circle Line travelled 118,000 train-km between disruptions.

Despite being the third best performing line with 174,000 train-km travelled between delays, the North-East line had a poorer showing compared to 2015, when it clocked 213,000 train-km.

The ageing North-South and East-West lines showed the worst performance for MRT lines. The North-South line achieved 156,000 train-km, an improvement from 121,000 train-km in 2015. Reliability on the East-West Line worsened, from 162,000 train-km in 2015 to 145,000 train-km last year.

Retiree who fell off Bishan MRT escalator awakes from coma after two months

    Published 10 hours ago

Man who fell at Bishan MRT station can now move slightly and respond to questions

    Ng Huiwen

Retiree Lim Chwee Leong, 64, awoke from his coma yesterday, two months after he fell on an escalator at Bishan MRT station.

The incident was among the more than 60 others that took place late last year and cast a spotlight on elderly escalator users’ safety.

When The Straits Times visited Mr Lim at Tan Tock Seng Hospital yesterday evening and chatted with him, he was able to nod in response to simple questions. He was also able to move his right leg and hand slightly.

Yesterday was the first time Mr Lim had spoken since the accident on Nov 12.

His son Lim Ka Hock, 46, said he received the good news in the afternoon when his father’s girlfriend telephoned from the hospital.

“She was yelling in his ear, telling him about how so many people have been helping us,” he said. “He will need more time to recover, but I am overjoyed to hear this good news.”

Mr Lim said his father had told his girlfriend that he remembered he had a fall at the MRT station.

“As for his memory of other things, he will still need some time, but we are hopeful,” he said.

There were 63 accidents involving escalators in November and December, according to figures from the Building and Construction Authority last month. Nearly four out of five such accidents involved those aged above 60.

The elder Mr Lim, who is in a recovery ward, underwent a tracheostomy and two operations to his brain while in a coma.

His son, who works as a delivery driver, previously told The Straits Times that he was worried about his father’s chances of recovery and future medical costs. It will cost about $2,000 a month, after government subsidies, for his father to receive proper care at a nursing home - if he can be discharged from the hospital, said the younger Mr Lim.

The younger man, who is divorced, lives in a four-room HDB flat in Bishan with his father, two siblings and a 15-year-old son. They are unable to care for his father full-time as they have to work or go to school.

Several people have reached out to him after reading about the incident in the news and offered money and food, he said.

Train delays of more than 30 minutes up in last three years: MOT

    By Alfred Chua

    Published: 10:10 AM, January 12, 2017

    Updated: 3:26 PM, January 12, 2017

SINGAPORE — The number of severe train delays of more than 30 minutes has increased over the last three years, even as the Government made strides in improving minor delays, said Permanent Secretary for Transport Pang Kin Keong on Thursday (Jan 12).

To improve the Republic’s rail reliability, the Government will continue to invest some S$4 billion to renew, upgrade and expand existing rail assets, over and on top of the existing S$20 billion it has committed to spending on new rail lines in the same period, added Mr Pang, who was speaking at the opening of the third joint forum on infrastructure maintenance.

Giving updates on rail performance last year, he said the mean kilometre between failure (MKBF) for incidents resulting in delays of more than five minutes recorded on the entire network increased from 133,000 train-kilometre in 2015, to 174,000 train-kilometre last year — a 30 per cent improvement.

The Downtown Line was the best performer, said Mr Pang, noting that its MBKF was 260,000 train-kilometre in 2016.

But despite all the MKBF improvements, the number of serious delays of more than 30 minutes have gone up in the past three years.

PUB to take action against MRT contractor over works that caused Upper Thomson floods

    Published: 6:15 PM, January 17, 2017

    Updated: 9:50 PM, January 17, 2017

SINGAPORE — Sato Kogyo had carried out unauthorised works that affected the public drainage system, and the national water agency PUB will be taking action against the company, it said after it carried out investigations into the Upper Thomson flooding incident.

The works carried out had contributed to the flooding, which took place on Christmas Eve, filling the area with knee-deep water. Some of the businesses in the vicinity were reported to have suffered damage worth thousands of dollars.

In a statement on Tuesday (Jan 17), the PUB said after the incident, it carried out an investigation at the Upper Thomson MRT station construction site and found that Sato Kogyo had carried out works that affected the public drainage system. Sato Kogyo had earlier been awarded the contract for the station’s construction.

“A temporary diversion drain constructed by the contractor within the worksite was found to be undersized, and the contractor did not inform PUB prior to the commencement of these works.

“The public drainage system across Upper Thomson Road (near Lorong Mega) was also found to have been altered by the contractor without PUB’s approval.”

The contractor, which has been told to carry out rectifications to improve the drainage in the area, will also be facing action under the Sewerage and Drainage Act, PUB said.

Contractors may be fined up to S$50,000 for works affecting the public drainage system, and up to $20,000 for unauthorised alteration of the public drainage system.

In its statement, PUB noted that contractors must seek approval from the agency and notify it before carrying out any works affecting the stormwater drainage systems within and near their construction sites. This is to ensure that these do not affect the functioning of the public drainage

    system.
