I have been a business partner to a local medium size company with subsidiaries in Malaysia and Thailand only in recent years. The owners of the business were family members passing the baton from grandfather to father (Albert) to son(Robert). Anyway, the business is doing well because of the foundation laid by Albert and the business can now just cruise along.
I am neither a charmer nor particularly charismatic, but my sense of humour and honesty often went far in earning the trust of the people. In addition, I frequently buy drinks for the people and with an impish smile, I often secretly flirted with Mary (Sean’s wife) and Jane (Freddy’s wife). Quite often, Robert would also try to flirt with Mary and Jane but that cut no ice with them but they pretended to find his sex jokes interesting. Behind his back, they complained to their husbands and I that he is a boar. There were a few social occasions where he went a little overboard by touching them all over the place when he invited them for a dance. Their wimpy husbands would pretend not to notice and Freddy even commented that both his wife and Robert can be quite a pair.

Although Robert pays himself a fat salary, he had difficulty managing business on his own. The news is out that Robert plan to take a hands off approach and he would like to hire someone with the right experience. Both Sean and Freddy were eyeing the top post and their wives obviously hope that their husbands would be successful. Let me now share a little more about Sean, Freddy and their wives. Freddy started as an apprentice after he completed his diploma in the polytechnic and has risen from the ranks to become Production Manager because he is a hardworking guy. He is about 40 years old. The process of selecting the CEO was quite long and it seemed like an endless wait.

Jane: Since I offered you the wine, I will also dance with you.

A quick instalment. Finally out of moderation.
As I am seen to be quite close to Robert, Freddy invited me for dinner at his condo. After the dinner, he asked for my help to influence Robert to give him the CEO post. His beautiful wife, Jane was also present. Before that, I alerted Jane of what I had overheard and told her that it wasn’t worth the while to sacrifice herself. She told me that Freddy has been very persistent and this was his dream. From young, he has always been looked down upon by his relatives for being lousy in his studies and that was the reason why he couldn’t get into Junior College to do GCE A levels and go to a local university.
He wanted to prove himself to the world and the CEO post mean the world to him. She told me that she had shared with Freddy about Robert’s proposal but they have not made up their mind. I told him not to threaten me and he could go ahead to get from other suppliers if there wasn’t any difference in the quality and consistency of my supplies. He disagreed with me on this point and said that I don’t understand the difficulty of finding alternative employment and if Freddy got the job, he would be forced to quit out of shame.
I told him that there was no need to quit even if Freddy got the job. As long as he could value-add to the company, his services would still be valued. Subsequently, Mary telephoned me to ask me once again whether Robert can be trusted with his words. I told her that I knew her predicament and she would be better off telling her husband to be more contented in life. She replied that the post meant so much to him.
Trying to write as much as I could recollect. Next week I could be busy but will try to write on the fly.
Robert was out of office for two weeks garden leave. That’s the term the company used for paid leave without the need to deduct from the leave entitlement. Everyone else in the company has 7 days leave a year with the exception of the CEO who will have 14 days annual leave. The Chairman as a source of inspiration and role-model, has 3 days annual leave and when on “official business”, he could take garden leave at his own discretion. During this period, Freddy was sent to Malaysia to troubleshoot some production issues at the plant there for a week. The next week, Sean was sent to America for a 2 weeks conference cum business. At both instances, both their wives did not join them on the “business trip”.
When Freddy was back, he spoke proudly of his abilities to re-design some of the work processes in the Malaysian plant and he was confident that he would be successful. He shared that his wife, Jane had full confidence in him. I secretly helped him use six sigma tools when he consulted me and asked for my help when he was at the Malaysian plant. That earned him a great reputation as an excellent problem solver or rather solution finder. When Sean was back from the US trip, he told me of the many possibilities that the company could expand there and he had met many high powered businessmen who were keen to do business with the company. Before his trip, I also helped him with some background research and got him in touch with some of the relevant senior company executives there. Credit must also go to him for working on the contacts that I passed to him.
When Robert was back, I met him to discuss some details of the supplies contract and he signed another year with me quite readily. I thought that I should approach directly since there was a veil threat from Freddy that he may cause some trouble for me when I did not seem too encouraging of his quest for the CEO post. Robert seemed to be in such good mood and as usual, I promised to sponsor a lucky draw prize of a return ticket and hotel stay 5D4N for his social gathering meetings and took him out for a drink. He shared a lot of intimate details of his recent adult conquests and told me that if I were half as capable as him, I would had reaped many more rewards that life has to offer. Sean and Freddy confronted Robert, calling him a rotten swine and wanting to break his bones. He dismissed them from their jobs but somehow, they were subsequently reinstated to their posts a couple of days later. I think they wanted to settle amongst themselves and agreed to discuss this issue in another country (I shall not name the country here for sensitivity reasons).
From the reports, the two guys tried bashing Robert up and he had prepared for this. He probably expected what would be the outcome and called the police during the scuffle of which both Sean and Freddy tried to break Robert’s back and legs. The two guys were arrested and were subsequently locked up by the authorities. I was told they had a very hard time while they were locked up. The wives were crying their hearts out because both women were pregnant and they were troubled by their husbands’ cases. Mary asked me for help to rescue her husband and to recommend a doctor for her to have an abortion.
I asked her to think about the abortion part carefully. She said that Robert had refused to acknowledge the child and Sean too couldn’t accept it. I was told that Sean had subsequently served his wife a divorce notification. Mary found no reason to keep the new life (aka Robert’s baby). I helped her with the abortion and her cousin recommended a lawyer to help her with the divorce.
For Freddy’s case, his wife was also pregnant and she wasn’t sure of whether she would like to continue her relationship with someone like Freddy. He scolded her, punched her and abused her for not helping enough to lift him up to the CEO post and his predicament was entirely blamed onto his wife, Jane. Jane was very upset and she too wanted to abort the child and had approached me for help too. Fortunately or unfortunately, she had a miscarriage from the punches that Freddy had served on her. She didn’t know that the baby was dead until there was spotting and she approached me for help. Moving the fetal stethoscope slowly over her stomach, I listened carefully. At last, I turned to her and told her, sorry, the baby has gone to heaven. She was devastated and this was confirmed when she was examined at the hospital and the ultrasound results confirmed my findings. She did an immediate D&C and she cried until her eyes and face swelled. Freddy had chased her out of their matrimonial home, calling her a useless slut and they were separated.
The so called “good thing” was the two marriages were childless and that made the parting of ways easier.
Very difficult to write so many stuff in one go. Simultaneously, I helped to persuade Robert not to press charges against Freddy and Sean but he was very determined. Their wives did not want to have anything more to do with Robert and they asked for my help to get their husbands to safety despite all that had happened. Both Sean and Freddy also begged me personally for help.
After much coaxing and unimaginable praises that I heaped on Robert’s generosity (ie I normally hate to carry balls but forced to do it this time especially when Robert is real miser), Robert finally relented and said okay, he never wanted to see two idiots (Sean and Freddy) back in the company and he don’t want to see them again. Freddy and Sean were thankful to me for my help. In addition, I also helped them to get their bonus and some severance allowance from the company.
Robert was quite upset that I did all these for the two idiots (ie Robert signed the cheques blindly allowing Sean and Freddy to get fairly good “retrenchment benefits”. I got the secretary to prepare the cheques for Robert to sign). He couldn’t blame others as he signed the cheques but that also destroyed any positive feelings/ friendship he had for me. What I did to coax the secretary to do up the cheques and got him to sign it was evidence of my betrayal to his ego and friendship.

I have kept the story of my friendship with the secretary short because I don’t want to waste precious bandwidth space to detail it. Robert was a guy who will bear a grudge easily and I knew he would take revenge on me later. For some minor errors in the deliveries of supplies which were common in our trade, he wanted to terminate the contract with me. He put it across that his customers needed high quality work from him and I had difficulty following through on the supplies side. Everyone else in the company knew that that was a “face saving” way for him to get me out and I had the sympathy from particularly Auntie Janet who was aware of my Jai Dee (good heart in Thai). Auntie Janet was a Thai lady who migrated to Singapore and married an elderly who is now suffering from dementia.
I knew that I had crossed the line to help Freddy and Sean and there was a cost on trying to be a Good Samaritan. I knew this would come to haunt me, took it in my stride and made my quiet exit from the company. I still kept in touch with Auntie Janet occasionally. This meant a financial loss of up about 60% to 70% of my business. Life would be quite tough when I thought about making only 30% of my profits but life has to go on. Luckily, I had been frugal in spending and had fully paid up a three bedroom condominium in an outskirt area using the profits that I earned from the business.
Both Mary and Jane who left their matrimonial homes do not have close relatives and had to urgently rent a place. I helped them search for rooms through an agent and at that time, the supply of rooms and houses were fairly tight. The rooms that I found for them were comfortable but it turned out that the rents were too high and they can’t afford the long term rental without a job. After staying in the rented places for less than four months and not being able to secure long term employment, their savings had almost evaporated.
As part of their divorce agreements, they gave up their share of their ex-matrimonial homes because both women were very loyal and devoted to their wimpy husbands who wanted everything and every asset.
