SINGAPORE: What was supposed to be a supper date turned into an ordeal for a 17-year-old girl, who was allegedly gang-raped by five young men.
The girl, now 18, had agreed to have a meal with a man called “Jonathan” in December last year. Instead, she was taken to a flat in Woodlands, where the men took turns to rape and sexually assault her.
The accused – Muhammad Shafie bin Ahmad Abdullah, 19; Mohd Sadruddin bin Azman, 19; Lim Boon Tai, 20; Rishi Mohan, 17; and Mohamed Firdaus bin Roslan, 18 – have denied the charges and are likely to testify that the sex was consensual.
Shafie and Lim were full-time National Servicemen at the time of the offence, while Sadruddin and Firdaus were then waiting for their O-level results. Rishi, a Malaysian citizen, was a student at the Institute of Technical Education.
The morning after the alleged crime, the girl’s boyfriend called the police after she told him what happened. Four days later, the men were arrested.
In his opening statement, deputy public prosecutor Gordon Oh said on the evening of Dec 25 last year, the victim was on a bus to Woodlands bus interchange and on the way home, when a man calling himself “Jonathan” rang her and asked to have supper with her.
“Jonathan” did not turn up. Instead, a friend of the girl – who is one of the accused – arrived in a taxi to pick her up from Woodlands MRT station.
He brought her to a flat in Woodlands, where she was introduced to the other men. There, Lim introduced himself as Jonathan.
The victim joined four of the accused men in a card game where the loser had to drink a soft drink mixed with vodka.
She had more than five disposable plastic cups of the cocktail, Mr Oh said.
During another game, the victim – whose head was spinning from the alcohol by that point – refused to kiss Lim as a forfeit.
The games ended when someone knocked on the flat’s door. Thinking it was Shafie’s parents returning home, the group suggested that the victim and Lim hide in a room together.
In the room, Lim allegedly pushed the girl onto a mattress and made sexual advances. She resisted but with her head feeling heavy, gave in to him.
Later, while she was resting in Shafie’s room, the men allegedly entered, stripped her and took turns raping and sexually assaulting her.
Two psychiatrists will testify that the girl now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has depressive symptoms, said Mr Oh.
In court on Tuesday, the men – three of them bespectacled – sat in the cramped dock. Few of their family members appeared to be in court, but they seemed relaxed and were seen smiling and talking to each other.
The trial continues on Wednesday.

i read this on TNP today too.. was surprised that they are bailed out for only S$50k.. isnt that too little ?
50k for a crime that warrant 20 yrs jail ? i think they should think out jump bail and run road now….
this seem to be a sure convicted case, the gal was still wearing the same shirt and it was reported 3 hours after the rape…. i expect these guys to be given 12 rotan at least.
haha.. these ah bengs can still laugh and smile in court, wait they kenna sentensed at rotan until backside tear then they know.
It is sad that this happened.
From what I read, the boys’ defense lawyers will claim that she willingly accepted an invite from a total stranger on the phone and willingly participated in all events leading to sex. That she was wet and did not fight or violently protest also showed consent. That she now claims rape may be a lame excuse concocted to answer to her bf on her whereabouts for the whole night. That her father jumped to the conclusion that she was in trouble with the law (again) when he saw the police at their home attests to the fact that she has a history of being a worldly wise street smart person to have known better the intentions of the boys throughout the entire sequence of events. That she bled could have been that the boys were too rough in the heat of the moment but by no means does it constituted rape.
Yes, there must be a lot of rapes, gang or singular, that are not reported, but there are also many cases where the women cry rape after the fact to try and cover up their one moment of indiscretion when caught.
As for running away, unless they already have PR or citizenship in a country without extradition treaties with us, where can the boys go?
You cant run away from Interpol.. Simple as that.. Which ulu country you want to hide.. Maybe some tiny island in the pacific with the tribe ppl.. Lol..

When the defense lawyer ask the gal whether she know she’s taking alcohol and whether she remember ’everything’ after she was drunk, tat’s where the case closed. I guess those guys hav everything figured out before hand liao ba…
Anyway tat gal 17yrs old right? When the Women Charter steps in those guys also will ganna one.
There’s too much sad stories every minute around the world liao, time will flashes evrything away…hoped she heals
if this is not handle properly and those boys goes scot-free than can see more of this cases,
btw can we blame it on the raids campaign recently?

why did the gal went 2 the flat alone ?
why did the gal stayed on in the flat 2 play cards with all the guys ?
2 me,the gal must also take some blame ….. the boys r definitely @ fault as well.
